Ophine Overton Obituary

"ALL night, ALL day ANGELS are watching over the Kee-Overton Families"

"Precious Lord, take my hand
Lead me on, let me stand
I am tired, I am weak, I am worn
Through the storm, through the night
Lead me on through the light
Take my hand, precious Lord
And lead me home..."

On Thursday, February 21, 2019 at the Capital Caring Hospice Center in Greenbelt, MD, our beautiful Ophine Marie Kee Overton was called home to take her seat in the Lords Choir and sing the songs of Zion. Ophine was born on January 17, 1936 to the late James Washington Kee and Bessie Smith Kee.

Throughout her years she would sing hymns, while her father played the piano, right here at Joppa Missionary Baptist Church, where she was a member for many, many years. She was the President of the Senior Choir and the Treasurer of the church. Many people here can attest to her remarkable voice and know that she loved to sing God’s praises.

"...When my way grows dreary
Precious Lord, lead me near
When my life is almost gone
At the river I will stand
Guide my feet, hold my hand
Take my hand, precious Lord
And lead me home..."

Ophine met and married her husband of fifty years, James E. Overton, who preceded her in death. They moved to Washington, D.C., and they both worked for the Atlantic and Pacific (A&P) Food Store. She eventually left there to begin employment at Woodward & Lothrop, where she modeled their clothes and assisted customers. She loved to dress up with many suits, hats and handbags. As the matriarch of the Overton family, she was strong willed, determined, loving and even feisty at times. As kids, we recall when she told us to look out for each other. If someone fought one of us, then we were supposed to jump in and fight them all.

Friends and family will have an hour to view and reflect on the melodious voice of Mrs. Ophine earthly shell starting promptly at the ten o'clock hour on Friday, the first day of March two thousand nineteen, at the Joppa Missionary Baptist Church. Celebration of Life Services for Mrs. Ophine will convene promptly at eleven o'clock in the morning, with Pastor William D. Wiggins, Jr., bringing forth words of comfort for the family and friends. Her final place of rest will be in the Kee Family Cemetery, beside her beloved husband.

Ophine leaves to cherish her memory six (6) children: Sharon L. Miller of Clinton, MD; Jacqueline O. Allen (Mick) of Bryantown, MD; Janet M. Overton of Largo, MD; James E. Overton, Jr., of Hobbsville, NC; Sandra E. Powell (Kenneth) of Upper Marlboro, MD; and Bryant D. Overton of Upper Marlboro, MD. One special sister, Otelia Kee Miner of Hobbsville, NC; eleven (11) grandchildren, Che Miller, Jonathan Thomas, Zenzi Miller, Theresa Miller, Erica Miller, Kenneth Powell, Jr., Kolby Powell, Patrick J. Pierce, Kalin Powell, Bryant D. Overton, Jr., and Brandon D.
